Thursday Nights: Birmingham City 11/12

Who? – Birmingham City Football Club

What? – Europa League 2011/12

Where? – Birmingham, England and across Europe

When? – August – December 2011

How? – Similarly to Wigan Athletic, Birmingham City achieved the shock feat of going all the way in the Carling Cup and overturning bigger opposition in Arsenal in 2010. Obafemi Martins sealed the winning goal as Arsenal’s quest for a trophy since 2005 was halted once again but like Wigan, Birmingham would be relegated to the Championship and lose key players. Below shows the path of how the Blues faired in their Europa League campaign, where they were unfortunate to finish 3rd in the group one point off Braga and Club Brugge.

Group H:

Play-off Round Leg 1: Nacional 0–0 Birmingham City

Play-off Round Leg 2: Birmingham City 3-0 Nacional (Redmond 15′, Murphy 24′, Wood 86′)
